(St. John’s, NL - March 8, 2024) — The 2025 Canada Games Host Society is thrilled to announce the winner of the Mascot Challenge and unveil the official mascot design, thanks to the creativity and imagination of a Witless Bay student.

The journey to find the mascot started in November 2023 after the Host Society tasked students in grades 4-6 across Newfoundland and Labrador to submit a design that reflects the province's identity, culture and heritage. 

Michael Tobin’s illustration was selected by a panel of judges with over 300 entries from schools across the island. His design has transformed into the official 2025 Canada Games mascot now known as “Gusty” the codfish. 

“The 2025 Canada Games Mascot Challenge was an inspiring journey, engaging young minds from across Newfoundland and Labrador," said Karen Sherriffs, CEO, 2025 Canada Games. “It's heartening to witness the incredible creativity and talent displayed by students in grades 4-6 as they brought their visions to life.” 

Gusty's design integrates elements of our rich cultural tapestry, while his colourful stripes symbolize the spirit of unity and inclusivity that defines the 2025 Canada Games.

“The cod is a symbol of Newfoundland and Labrador and speaks to the unique culture, history and stories of the region,” added Sherriffs. 

As part of the winning design, Tobin will receive a class party and visit from Gusty and the once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to be a torchbearer in the Orangestore 2025 Canada Games Torch Relay. Gusty will come to life in June 2024 and can be found going across the region sharing his excitement for the Games.
