The Swilers Rugby Club

Rugby has a deep-rooted history in Newfoundland. As far back as the late nineteenth century the game was well organized and flourished. In 1977, the Newfoundland Rugby Union formed a league and the Swilers Rugby Football Club was born.

In December of 1985, the Swilers, with the grateful assistance of loyal patrons, purchased a clubhouse/bar in downtown St. John’s that became instrumental for future fundraising and overall club morale. In June 1986, construction began on the present Swilers Rugby Complex on Crosbie Road.

The Swilers Rugby Club leadership continued the growth and investment and further expanded in 2005 adding additional change rooms, a kitchen and doubling the size of the clubhouse to complete the multi-million dollar facility. In 2019, $1.5 million was invested into the natural turf playing surface in order to attract international events.

To this day, the Swilers Rugby Club remains not only the most storied but also one of the most prestigious, highest-quality rugby facilities in Canada.
