The 2025 Canada Games Host Society is thrilled to support the 2024 Green Sports Day in collaboration with community partners.
Green Sports Day is a worldwide celebration of the positive impact that sports can have for people and the planet. Since the day’s first announcement in 2016 by US President Barack Obama, this movement has continued to grow. It is now being celebrated in over 13 countries.
This year, through collaboration with the Green Sports Alliance, the 2025 Canada Games brought the celebration to Newfoundland and Labrador. This led to the City of St. John’s and the Town of Paradise proclaiming October 6, 2024 as Green Sports Day. These proclamations demonstrate a collective acknowledgment of the connection between sport and environmentalism.
The Host Society was also part of the 2024 Green Sports Day Canada Summit this past week. The 2025 Games were the first to hire a Sustainability Coordinator, who joined representatives from the Canada Games Council, the University of Toronto, and Climate Positive Energy to discuss the crucial role of collaboration in leveraging sport and sporting events to drive climate action.
The Green Sports Day Canada Summit showcased a number of other panels last week including a discussion with Canadian Olympians on the climate challenges identified at the Paris 2024 Olympics, a panel on sustainable sponsorship in Canadian sports, and the debut of a film festival featuring documentaries on sustainability in sport.
