Memorial University announces partnership with 2025 Canada Games

Memorial University is an official community partner of the 2025 Canada Games.

The announcement was made earlier today at Bitters Pub on Memorial’s St. John’s campus. The Games will be held from Aug. 8-25 in the capital city.

“We’re proud to be playing such a critical role in this important event for the province,” said Dr. Neil Bose, president and vice-chancellor. “Memorial University will become a home away from home for athletes, coaches, managers, trainers and more. We’re excited to showcase all that our university has to offer to the rest of the country.”

Twenty-six buildings across Memorial’s St. John’s campus will be used for the Games. A large part of Memorial’s involvement will be its transformation into the Games’ village, which will include providing quarters for more than 4,800 athletes, coaches and managers.

Memorial will also provide space for provincial and territorial mission offices, medical and wellness clinics, media and broadcast centres, quiet areas and gathering places.

Competition venues at Memorial include the Aquarena, which is currently being renovated to meet the Canada Games standards for artistic swimming, diving and swimming events.

Memorial’s Field House will be used for basketball and volleyball.

The Fortis Canada Games Complex, a world-class, multi-use recreation and sports facility, is being built for athletics (track and field) and soccer.

The facilities will be available for users beyond the Canada Games, leaving a legacy of campus upgrades as well as academic and work-integrated learning opportunities for students and the community.

“The Canada Games offers many opportunities for the university community,” said Dr.  Bose. “From volunteering to incorporating the Games into classroom curricula, the legacy of the Games will be felt on campus for many years to come.”

Kim Keating, co-chair of the Canada Games host society board of directors, says Memorial’s involvement is critical to the Games’ success.

"As a home away from home for athletes and coaches, and the host of seven of our 19 sporting events, Memorial University plays an integral role in creating an unforgettable Games experience,” she said. “This partnership strengthens the foundation of the Games itself while paving the way for a legacy that will be felt long after."

The Canada Games is the largest multi-sport event in the country. Held every two years and alternating between summer and winter sports, the Games showcases the best in amateur youth sport. St. John’s last hosted the Games in 1977.
