Sporting events have the power to create positive environmental change far beyond the field of play.
In honour of the 55th annual Earth Day, the 2025 Canada Games is proud to announce an agreement with Tree Canada that will deliver multiple tree planting projects. A combination of community-based and rural planting projects will leave a powerful legacy of regeneration, resilience, and climate education.
To help offset environmental impacts from the Games, 5,000 trees (one for every athlete competing in the 2025 Canada Games) will be planted in Caledonia Gorge, New Brunswick. Planted less than 30 minutes out from one of the 2029 Canada Games host cities (Moncton), this initiative serves as part of Tree Canada’s National Greening Program and will contribute to long-term forest health in Atlantic Canada.
In the Avalon area, the 2025 Canada Games will support two community-based tree planting projects that have been selected by Tree Canada’s Community Tree Grants program.
St. Kevin’s Junior High in the Goulds will plant 100 fruit and nut trees to support sustainable food systems and enhance community education. Harvests will benefit the local food bank.
Memorial University’s Botanical Gardens will plant 400 trees across campus to restore green spaces lost to storms and infrastructure work, aligning with MUN’s 100th anniversary.
Together, these efforts demonstrate the Games’ commitment to climate resilience, youth education, and community engagement—leaving a living legacy that will grow long after the Closing Ceremony.
